On Thursday, December 7, 2022, an Edo High Court sitting in Auchi convicted and sentenced one Taofeek Isah to death by hanging for kidnapping, gang rape, and torturing a 20-year-old woman, Blessing Ezekiel, with harmful substance, while three others were sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to 19 years.
Taofeek Isah, Jeremiah Okamudu, Godwin Adeyemi, and Miracle were convicted on five counts of rape, kidnapping, attack with harmful substance, inflicting physical injury, and unlawful trial by ordeal.
The presiding judge, Justice Philip Imoedemhe, sentenced Isah, the first defendant, to death; Jeremiah Okamudu, the second defendant, to four years in prison without the option of fine; and Miracle Pius, the fourth defendant, to 19 years in prison without the option of fine.
All of the evidence presented to the court, according to Justice Imoedemhe, convinced him beyond a reasonable doubt that the first, second, and fourth defendants were guilty of the charges.
Taofeek Isah was sentenced to death by hanging, while the other convicts were transferred to the Auchi Correctional Centre to serve their sentences.
During the trial, the lead prosecutor from the Edo State Ministry of Justice, Clement Eseigbe, claimed that Isah conspired with three of his friends to kidnap, gang rape, and severely assault a 20-year-old Blessing Ezekiel.
According to the prosecutors, the defendants committed the crimes on October 22, 2021, in the Okpella community of Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
“The defendants did rub pepper into Blessing’s vagina and inflicted physical injury on her by beating her with a cutlass, wood, and other dangerous objects,” Adekutu, another prosecutor, said.
The crimes committed “violate Section 4 and are punishable under Section 5 (1), (B), and Section 25 (1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law 2021.”
BraveHeart Initiative (BHI) for Youth and Women representatives expressed excitement in response to the verdicts.
