Engr Igboke: I Never Ordered For Arrest Of Any IPOB Member Says Onicha Council Boss

Published

on

The Executive Chairman of Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Engr Igboke Felix Ogbonna MNSE has said that he never directed for the arrest of anyone for being a member of IPOB or led a ‘House to house’ hunt for IPOB members in any part of Onicha LGA.

In a statement made available to our correspondents by Echofe Williams Echefulachi, Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman of Onicha LGA on Media & Publicity said that the publication circulating on the social media that his Principal has sworn to kill anyone who is a member of IPOB or has anything to do with ‘Biafra’ is false.

He noted that Engr Igboke is busy discharging his official duties as Council Chairman, carrying out Empowerment programs, executing projects, and running an all inclusive administration.

The statement reads in parts,
“The Attention of the Media Office of the Executive Chairman of Onicha LGA Has been drawn to malicious publications making rounds on some news platforms where it was alleged that Engr Igboke Felix Ogbonna MNSE the Executive Chairman of Onicha LGA and Prince Igwe Agwu Nwukpa the Coordinator of Ezeukwa Development Centre have sworn to kill anyone who is a member of IPOB or has anything to do with ‘Biafra’.”

“They went further to say that 7 persons have been abducted and even added that The Executive Chairman & Ezeukwa D/C Coordinator are moving from house to house arresting IPOB members.”

“While we urge members of the public to dismiss the allegations as entirely false, everyone must be informed that it is the handiwork of mischief makers and opposition elements who have resorted to playing bitter and mischievous politics with IPOB hence the persons towing this Ignoble path are advised to desist from dragging IPOB in their petty politics.”

“In the same vein & by way of clarification, the sad incident that occurred in Onicha Igboeze on Wednesday 8th September 2021 where Stray hit and killed a woman has nothing to do with men of EbubeAgu Security Network.

It is rather men of the Nigeria Police Force and efforts are on top gear to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book even as we sincerely condole with the family of the deceased.”

“Finally, Engr Igboke pleads that everyone in Onicha LGA should remain Law abiding while going about their daily businesses.”

Festus Keyamo: Federal Government Cannot Borrow N1.1 Trillion to End ASUU Strike

Published

on

Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, said on Friday that borrowing money to end the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ months-long strike was unrealistic.

He made the remark during an appearance on one the television channels.

“Should we borrow to pay N1.2 trillion a year?”

“You cannot allow one sector of the economy to hold you hostage and then blackmail you into borrowing N1.2 trillion for overheads when our total income would be around N6.1 trillion.” And you have to build roads, health centers, and other sectors.”
The Minister urged parents throughout the country to petition ASUU.

“Those who know them, like the President said the other time, appeal to their sense of patriotism,” he said.

“Let them go back to school.” They are not alone in Nigeria. They are not the only ones who benefit from federal funds. The nation cannot come to a halt because we want to meet ASUU’s demands.”

ASUU’s Demands

On February 14, ASUU began a four-week warning strike.

On March 14, the union extended the strike for another two months in order to allow the government to meet all of its demands. On May 9, a 12-week extension was announced.

The union has been on strike since May 9, vowing to continue until its demands are met.

Academics want better working conditions, the revitalization of public universities, and academic autonomy, among other things.

One point of contention for academics is the non-payment of N1.1 trillion in university revitalisation funds.

However, the Federal Government has stated that it does not have the funds to pay such a sum, citing low oil prices during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

According to reports, the agreement was reached in 2009.

Another issue is the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The University Transparency and Accountability Solution was proposed by academics as an alternative payroll system (UTAS).
